Bamboo Cottage

hospitality architecture | 2017

A cottage born out of necessity, designed with intent.

This bamboo cottage for us is a testament to the fact that when time runs short, creativity runs deep. Tasked with designing a cottage in under two months and on a shoestring budget, we turned to what the land offered – nature, speed and clarity of purpose.

Made in collaboration with Thumb Impressions, this structure embraces the efficiency of bamboo. A small footprint houses a bedroom, kitchen and open living area, proving that good design doesn’t demand excess.

An exercise in thoughtful design. Our learning? Simplicity doesn’t limit design – it liberates it.

Despite the restrictions, this bamboo cottage features architecture that is clean, deliberate, and honest. The bamboo structure rests on an extended plinth, carrying the weight passed down by the bamboo trusses in a lightweight roof. Below, wattle and daub walls bring an earthy tactility, grounding the cottage in its natural surroundings.
