India Art Fair 2015 for Vana Retreats

Our installation for Vana at India Art Fair is conceived as a skin that creates a cocoon over the large communal dining table. The idea for the skin is to build a sensual surface which evokes emotions and explores the opulence of sustainable materials. There is a conscious attempt to deviate from mass production and explore the symbiosis of technology  and artisans knowledge. It is the coming together of opposite but married worlds of form and fluidity, craft and technology. There is a sense of localism in the fabrication of the installation but at the same time it uses the latest digital tools and technology. The surface is a complex form that is structurally resolved using an extremely smart and defined system.

 

The skin works like a disjoint lattice. The structure of the organic form of the installation is resolved by a self supporting membrane wherein the material is the hero throughout. There is no facade, no cladding. Each member that constitutes to create the form is a structural member and plays an important part in the overall system. The system is made of a series of varying sizes of birch ply that are linked to each other through independent metal connectors.
